Failure to bird control a commercial building can lead to all sorts of problems. The droppings pest birds leave seriously detract from a building’s appearance. The acid secretion produced by the fungi that live in bird droppings can mar paint and other surfaces. Cleaning and restoring buildings damaged by pest birds can be very expensive. Nests and droppings can, over time, clog gutters and down pipes, causing rooftops to leak or fill with water and possibly collapse. Pest bird nests and droppings can get sucked into ducts, grilles and vents, clogging commercial air conditioning and heating units, permanently damaging these expensive systems.

Bird droppings deposited at commercial building entrances and fire escapes increase the likelihood that pedestrians may slip and fall on them, creating a huge legal liability to commercial property owners. Droppings also spoil finished products in loading bays and storage areas. They ruin the appearance of costly finished goods, metal panels, and stonework. Droppings can also eat into and destroy wood, paper and cardboard packaging of products on pallets or outside storage.

There are many other reasons to bird control a commercial building. Pest birds create offensive odors, which can be a nuisance to restaurants, especially with outdoor service. Accumulated on signage , droppings are unsightly and can ruin the image of a business.

Pest birds can also be a health hazard, carrying and transmitting any of 60 known diseases. Sparrows and Feral Pigeons can carry bacteria causing Salmonellosis. Feral Pigeons carry Ornithosis, which is similar to viral pneumonia. Birds, bird droppings and their nesting materials contain insects and mites. These insects can damage property and stored foods.

Fortunately, there are a wide variety of effective and humane ways to bird proof a commercial building .

One very popular product for persuading pest birds to stay away is the bird spike. Ideal for pigeons and other large birds, some are made of strong, rigid unbreakable polycarbonate, others have marine grade stainless steel spikes. Similar to the spikes is the bird spider. Recommended for rooftops and other flat surfaces, the spider arms move with the breeze, keeping wild birds from landing. The Bird Spiders come in a variety of diameters and install easily. And while they look menacing, spikes and spiders won’t harm bird 1000 s and are virtually invisible once installed.

Bird netting is another effective pest bird solution. It’s ideal for a broad range of commercial uses, including signs, warehouses, courtyards, canopies, airplane hangars and rooftops. Best of all it can be used to control all species of birds and even specified by architects. Look for netting that’s U.V. stabilized, flame resistant and rot and waterproof. Webbing can be ordered in a variety of mesh sizes to deter sparrows, starlings, pigeons, seagulls and larger birds.

For a really simple approach, there’s the bird slope. These angled, slippery panels are ideal for eaves, ledges, beams and other 90-degree areas where pest birds tend to nest and roost. Birds just slide off when they try to land. Another simple solution is bird gel. Easy to apply, gels create a sticky surface that really annoy pest birds. Safe for birds and people, gels are ideal for ledges, I-beams, parapet walls, conduit, pipes, and flat or curved surfaces.

For large industrial or commercial garages, factories, airline hangars, courtyards, landfills, parking lots, or other commercial areas, bird misting systems are now available. Both humane and effective, these bird-hazing systems work by releasing an ultra fine mist into the air that pest birds can’t see and just don’t like. The mist is a chemical called methyl anthranilate, a grape extract that naturally occurs in concord grapes. The extract has been widely used for decades to deter a wide variety of pest birds including, sparrows, pigeons, starlings, crows, blackbirds and geese. Yet it’s safe for people, pets, plants and birds.

Other commercial bird controlling solutions include the electric-track bird deterrents. Ideal for deterring all birds, they discourage birds from landing by conveying a mild electric shock that’s harmless to birds. They also alter a bird’s habits to nest or feed. These are easily mounted on ledges, signs, rooftops, and flat or curved surfaces. They are low profile and virtually invisible once installed. If you choose this type of bird deterrent, opt for the flow-through design to keep water from damming up on rooftops and other surfaces. Get corrosion-resistant tracks that resist alkali and acidic environments.

Now that spring has arrived you are getting ready to plant and flower your garden. You will probably spend hours gardening and making your yard look attractive, but how will you get rid of the pesky uninvited peasant intruders ready to nest in your garden and pollute your yard with bird or pigeon droppings? How to remove birds? One of the best ways is a good bird repellent.

What bird repellent works best?:

Bird spikes, bird netting, bird repellers and other bird control methods are best to remove birds. Bird Spikes are an easy to use and economical way to keep birds like pigeons and seagulls off you’re your home. They are easy to install simply by screwing or glueing them to the edges and peaks of your roof to keep them off. They also work well on patio covers, fences and on any other flat surface where birds nest. Bird control netting is used to remove unwanted birds from areas such as under the eaves of your home. installing bird netting at an angle from the edge to the side will protect your home from birds like swallows and woodpeckers. There are also battery operated repellers. These units sweep birds away with a rotating motion. They are usually solar powered and run at night. A bird repeller is ideal to keep pest pigeons and larger birds away.

An ultrasonic bird repeller is used to scare birds away with noise. These are usually predator calls and distress calls played in short intervals. The sounds trigger the birds instincts to danger and they will go away. Choose a sound for a specific bird like a; crow, pigeon, sparrow, etc. Some get rid of geese.

Visual control create a visual distraction that causes the birds to fly away. Flash tape is a visual deterrent that can be used in garden areas to keep pest birds away from plants and seeds. You can mount the flash tape on poles in your garden, as the breeze moves the pieces of shiny Mylar tape, the suns reflection off of the tape irritates the birds and they will stay away. There are also scare balloons and diverters available to irritate pest birds. The scare balloons have reflective eyes that cause a visual diversion area and cause the birds to fly in the other direction. The balloons and diverters can be hung from the eaves of your home to keep woodpeckers away. Bird diverters also work well to protect fruit trees from pest birds.

The key on how to remove birds from your home, garden or industrial building is to first know what type of bird you are having a problem with. It may be necessary to use more than one product to get rid of the birds. It is often wise to use the sound deterrents in conjunction with the visual repellents to make it uncomfortable for the birds thus keeping them away.

There are various sonic devices, that are available in the market today which act as major bird repellents. The bird repellents work using the ultrasonic sound waves, which become quite useful in pigeon control process.

There are many products like netting bird, spikes bird, pest bird control that can help you. There is a number of machinery and other pesticides could be used to prevent pest birds. Such as bird repellents.

Pigeons often prefer to use the interior portions of buildings to nest and roost if an opportunity for access is provided. Openings to lofts, steeples, vents, and eaves can be blocked with 1/2-inch galvanized wire mesh, wood, sheet metal, or other solid construction materials to prevent pigeons from entering.

Controlling pigeons on the exterior surfaces of buildings often requires considerably more effort. The most effective and permanent methods of control involve structural modifications which either physically exclude pigeons from the preferred surface or make it difficult for the birds to rest comfortably on the exposed building surfaces. Physical exclusion can be accomplished by installing weather resistant netting, wire screening, sheet metal, or other materials in a manner that will restrict access to the roosting sites. A grid of heavy gauge monofilament line spaced at six-inch intervals may also be used to create a fence that will interfere with the birds’ normal flight pattern to the roosting area.

One of the most effective, although expensive methods for preventing roosting pigeons is the use of a commercially available bird barrier system consisting of a series of metal prongs or porcupine wires along a metal base that can be attached to a horizontal roosting surface. The needle-like strips of stainless steel act as a prickling fence to exclude birds permanently without harm.

Pigeons prefer to roost on level surfaces. Roosting areas can be modified to create a sloping surface, at a 60 degree incline or more, Pigeon problems by installing wire mesh or other material to eliminate the level surfaces. There are also a number of non-toxic sticky substances pigeon problem registered as tactile repellents for bird control efforts. Birds tend to avoid landing upon treated areas but the effectiveness is usually lost over time.

Nest removal:
Although time-consuming and unpleasant, removing nests will help depress populations. Nest destruction must be followed by pigeon-proofing the structure to achieve maximum population control.

Toxicants:
There is only one product registered for lethal control of pigeons in California and can only be used by a certified pest control operator. The product is generally not appropriate or feasible for most nuisance situations. We are strongly against this.

Pigeon problems Trapping:
Pigeons may be live-trapped on buildings and other likely locations. Live-traps for pigeons are available. Pre-baiting the traps with grains that the birds are accustomed to will increase success. A variety of baits, including cracked corn, millet, popcorn, sunflower seeds, peas, bread, and peanuts can be used. Water is available in the trap at all times. Trapping in any given area is usually will reduce the number of pigeons quickly and humanely, it is labor intensive, and most of the time a great reduction measure.

Acoustical and visual repellents are other means of reducing pigeon usage, but pigeons usually become accustomed quickly to these scare devices. There is very limited success using helium-filled eyespot balloons, predator (owl) decoys, and reflective mylar tape in roosting areas. Pigeon problem The same limited success is achieved by the use of noisemaking devices such as tape-recorded bird distress calls, firing of blank cartridges, and the use of propane-fired cannons in agricultural areas. Combining a number of techniques and frequent changes in the duration and location of the repellent may increase success.

Pigeon problems Repellents:
A sticky substance applied with a caulk gun where birds roost. Results are immediate!!! Keep birds off their normal roosting areas with an application of bird gel a liquid a sure-fire, non-toxic, non-lethal bird repellent. Harmless to metal structures, sealed masonry and ornamental metals, Bird-Proof can protect your property from messy bird deposits for up to a full year or longer with one thorough application.

Bird-gel works in any weather, indoors or outdoors, literally anywhere: on water tanks, trees, shrubbery, shipping docks and railroad sidings, yards, parking lots, etc.

With one application of Bird-gel you’ll drive off the birds that are infesting your premises now and prevent new birds from taking over

Spikes
Dense, Transparent Needle Strips, block pest birds from their "landing strips" very effective but expensive "keep off" sign you can post. Birds instinctively fly to "landing strips" such as roof ledges, windowsills, building projections, signs, statues, trusses and beams. Now you can keep them from landing on your property permanently!
TOUGH. Long-lasting provides decades of maintenance-free protection.
TRANSPARENT. It does the job without marring the look of your property.
Netting
Netting is the most efficient and effective method to prevent birds from entering parking garages, airline hangers, warehouses, loading docks, attics, eves, courtyards and other exposed enclosures. Netting is manufactured from knotted polyethylene twine, is flame resistant, and very strong. When installed, netting is virtually invisible.

Wild birds are more often than not a welcome sight, particularly in the countryside, but when birds such as seagulls, pigeons, crows and sparrows to name but a few, start congregating in very large numbers on rooftops, fences, outbuildings and other structures, then far from being welcome visitors, they actually turn into quite a nuisance.

The problem with birds

- The accumulation of faeces produced by lots of birds is not a pretty sight, particularly when it is splattered across roads, gardens, buildings, cars, windows and even laundered clothes that are hanging out to dry

- Bird droppings are unhygienic and can pose a health risk to humans and other animals. They can also cause paths and other walkways to become slippery so increase the risk of falling, particularly for the elderly and the disabled.

- Fruits, flowers and vegetables growing in gardens or fields nearby are likely to be ruined

- The constant and noisy calling of large numbers of birds together can be irritating and stressful for the entire neighbourhood

- If you live near the coast then the swooping of seagulls can be disconcerting or even frightening, especially for small children

Fortunately, there is an effective solution available in the form of bird spikes.

What are bird spikes?

Bird spikes are long thin rods with blunted tips that can be attached to rooftops, fences, lighting, cameras and other structures that will effectively deter birds from landing there.

It is important to note that these spikes do not harm the birds at all; they just limit the amount of space available making it uncomfortable for them to land or perch so that they are forced into finding somewhere else to go.

There are a number of advantages to using bird spikes such as:

- They are a humane and highly effective way of preventing large numbers of birds from perching anywhere that you don’t want them to - They are suitable for deterring even larger and heavier birds - They are easy to install - They last a long time so are an extremely cost effective solution - They are inconspicuous from a distance so will not spoil the scenery

If you want to position bird spikes in a spot that is very high, then it is recommended that you call in a professional to fit them for you to avoid the risk of falling.

Legal Considerations

It is illegal to kill wild birds that are not causing a severe health risk to the human population. Many species of birds are protected by law which can make it difficult to control them. If you choose a technique that scares birds away then it mustn’t be used close to the nests of certain protected species, such as those listed in schedule 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

You are legally entitled to deter wild birds from accessing a specific area but whatever method you choose must not be designed to harm, trap or kill a bird and neither must it disturb their nests or prevent them from accessing their nests. Bird spikes are therefore a very effective measure to successfully deter unwanted birds from landing in a particular space.

In order to understand the difference between pigeon removal to crow removal, first we shall learn about the damages that each group creates.
The human kind nurtured the Pigeons and the crows consciously or unconsciously.

The crows are known to be omnivores, so as such they eat fruits in the fields (watermelon or melon fields) and pecan nuts which can be found abundantly in the orchards. Corpses of other animals that were ran down by cars, leftovers out of the garbage and chicks and young cubs of other animals.
The Pigeons are vegetarian so the lion’s share of their meal is seeds and kernels which can be found abundantly in fields, cowsheds, wheat granaries, bakeries etc.
Food "stealing" is a fine motive for the man to methods against birds such as pigeons and crows.
Crows build their nests on trees and crannies in the rocks as opposed to the pigeons which prefer nesting in buildings and create a severe amount of mess, transfer diseases, spread bad smells and increase the parasites economy.

Crows are smart birds which have a well-developed memory. There have been cases when a bunch of crows attacked humans that they suspected to harm their chicks.
Sometimes, if a chick falls of a nest, the flock searches for it and if there are people somewhere by, they might be attacked by the vicious birds while innocent of any crime.
The pigeons are different on this case, if the chicks of the pigeon are been taken away, it will simply move on to another location until the next nesting season.
The pigeons create damage in the buildings: dirt on the walls, eaves trough plugging damage to cars and damage to stock in stores and storerooms.
Crows harm the nature (including other birds).
As a result of the food abundance, the number of crows in the nature was raised excessively so lack of territories was created.

Crows gain control on all of the territories, so instead of flying to the distance in the search for food, they eat voraciously the chicks and cubs of other animals, turtles, lizards etc.
As an answer for the damages and diseases that the birds brought, the human developed methods for bird control, some of the bird control methods are specialized for pigeons and some for crows.
The "techniques" of pigeons and crows have a little in common so that is way the solution for each kind is different.
Opposed to the pigeon, the crow does not transfer diseases and create mess therefore the motivation for the crow’s removal is much lower.

Pigeon removal [ bird control which is specialized against pigeons ] is done by two main bird control products :
Pigeon nets - pigeon nets prevent the entrance of pigeons to laundering rooms, roof space, warehouses, hangars etc.
The installation is very simple; stretching of a circumferential cable around the open and attachment of the net to the cable by threading or by using small rings.
Pigeon nets provide a 100% solution for preventing the pigeons’ entrance.
Crows do not intrude building therefore using bird nets for crow removal is pretty rare.

Stainless Steel Bird Spikes - The pigeons’ nuisance does not come to fruition by intruding building only, but by landing on gutters, building edges, air conditioners, roof tiles, banisters and windowsill and leaving their bird droppings anywhere by as well.

On most cases, the solution for this problem is pasting elastic bird spikes to the landing area which prevent the pigeons from landing. A similar solution is achieved by using bird coil or bird wire.
Crows land on edges and protuberances of objects such as buildings, antennas, water tanks, signs, and telephone or electricity posts. Therefore there is a similar solution against the crows; a special stainless steel bird spikes called Y model. Bird wire and bird coils don’t affect the crows.
Crows create a lot of damage in (watermelon and melon) fields as well as in pecan orchards; the solution for this problem is a huge net trap:

The trap looks like a great cage with a roof designed in a ‘V’ shape which has an open at the bottom of the ‘V’. A crow and bait are placed inside the trap, other crows fly in but they can’t get out because of their big wing span [which is bigger than the open of the cage]. This cage causes death to many of the crows so I oppose to it.
Traps for capturing pigeons are in use mainly in big warehouses and airports but not infields - in fields the solution is usually shooting or using crow dummies.
