Pigeons will breed throughout the year. They need a flat surface such as windowsills, balconies and other flat surfaces where they can roost.
The birds are generally not a health risk, but some diseases such as Histoplasmosis, Cryptococcosis, Psittacosis and Aspergillus spp Spores also found in bird droppings may cause the development of asthma, allergies or other forms of diseases associated with the lungs. wear a protective mask over your mouth and nose and wear gloves. Change your clothes immediately after finishing the job. when inhaled people may feel fatique, headaches, chills, fever.
Bacteria - Pigeons carry salmonella so with exposed domestic water tanks contamination may occur and can be a health risk.
Over all there is no concrete evidence which suggest that pigeons as a whole are a risk to humans, if anything they are more of a nuissance. The problem really is when these persitant birds roost in places where they aren’t wanted. They may be rid of for a short time but they can also return.
Here are some steps to get rid of pigeons:
- Dry up any puddles or standing water.
- Don’t leave food around the premises.
- Remove any nests surrounding or on the house or building. Make sure it is covered properly.
- Roofs and gutters are a popular place for birds to nest make sure it is well covered.
- Slope windowsills with a piece of board or metal placed at a 45 degree angle or more will help.
- Bird blinds should also be considered.
If all fails there are more preventive measures like pigeon spikes that seem to work well.
